Digital Literacy, Creativity & Innovation at Castle Park School

Technology at Castle Park is used with purpose. It supports strong teaching, encourages creativity and develops real-world skills – never as a substitute for meaningful interaction or hands-on learning.

Pupils learn to use technology as a tool for thinking, designing and problem-solving, developing confidence and independence as they progress through the school.

The Tools Pupils Use

Pupils work with industry-standard technology that builds practical skills:

  • Mac computers in our dedicated ICT suite, introducing a professional desktop environment
  • iPads for mobile learning, filming projects and outdoor data collection
  • Apple TV for sharing work, collaboration and class discussion

As pupils progress, they also access specialist equipment including 3D printers, robotics kits and drones, allowing them to design, test and refine ideas in practical ways.

Technology as a Learning Tool

Technology supports learning rather than distracting from it:

  • Screens are used to create, not consume
  • Pupils code, edit films, design models and build digital projects
  • Lessons focus on problem-solving, testing ideas and learning from mistakes
  • Digital learning is balanced with Forest School, outdoor learning and hands-on activities

A pupil may spend part of the day coding or designing and the next learning outdoors, creating a varied and focused learning experience.

Digital Learning & Innovation

  • How Digital Skills Develop Over Time

Digital learning builds gradually and appropriately across the school:

    • Pre-Primary and Junior Infants: simple, guided use of technology to support classroom themes
    • 1st to 6th Class: dedicated lessons in the ICT suite
    • Core skills such as typing, saving work, navigation and digital safety
Progression into coding, robotics, video editing and 3D design

By 6th Class, pupils confidently use technology to produce high-quality, independent project work.

  • Digital Learning in Action

Pupils apply their skills through practical, creative projects such as:

    • 3D Design & Printing: designing architectural structures or artwork using CAD software
    • Robotics: programming robots to complete physical challenges
    • Animation & Film: creating stop-motion and digital films combining storytelling, art and editing

These projects develop creativity, technical skill, teamwork and resilience.

  • Staying Safe and Sensible Online

Online safety is taught proactively and age-appropriately through:

    • Regular lessons, assemblies and discussion
    • Digital behaviour charters agreed with pupils
    • Focused learning during Anti-Bullying Week

Pupils learn about password security, privacy, online behaviour and treating others with respect. We work closely with parents, including expert-led talks, to ensure consistent messages between school and home. This is supported by our wider wellbeing and SEAL approach.

  • What Makes Digital Learning at Castle Park Distinctive
    • A dedicated ICT suite with Mac computers and specialist equipment
    • A strong STEAM focus linking Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths
    • Creativity and technical skills developed side by side
    • A balanced approach that values outdoor and hands-on learning

Digital learning at Castle Park is structured, thoughtful and grounded in real skills – preparing pupils for the next stage of their education and beyond.
