Science
Curiosity • Investigation • Outdoor Learning • Environmental Awareness
- Enquiry-led learning through questioning and investigation
- Hands-on experiments
- Learning in classrooms, woodland and outdoor spaces
- Strong focus on environmental care and real-world science
Science
Science at Castle Park is taught by a specialist teacher from 1st to 6th Class, with pupils receiving two 50-minute lessons each week. Lessons are led by a secondary school qualified science educator and qualified Forest School leader, ensuring learning is both academically strong and deeply connected to the natural world.
Our approach to science is practical, enquiry-based and engaging. Pupils are encouraged to ask questions, explore ideas and investigate how the world works through hands-on experiences. Learning focuses not just on scientific knowledge, but on developing key skills such as observing, predicting, experimenting, measuring, analysing and reflecting.
Science teaching takes place in a fully resourced specialist classroom, as well as in our outdoor classroom and woodland areas. These outdoor spaces play an important role in supporting environmental awareness and care, allowing pupils to learn directly from nature. Forest School sessions, outdoor investigations and field trips help bring learning to life and deepen understanding in meaningful ways.
A spiral approach ensures that scientific skills are revisited and strengthened each year. In the younger classes, pupils develop a sense of curiosity and learn the importance of asking questions. As they progress through the school, they design and carry out experiments, record findings, evaluate results and build confidence in their own scientific thinking.
Pupils particularly enjoy the hands-on nature of science lessons, outdoor learning, experiments, working with living things and having a say in how their learning develops. By the time they leave Castle Park, pupils are confident, curious scientists who can question, investigate and think critically about the world around them.
Art
Creativity • Skill Development • Expression • Confidence
- Specialist-led art from the early years
- Exploration of materials, techniques and processes
- Developing technical skill alongside creative thinking
- Regular opportunities to present and display work
Art
At Castle Park, Art is taught by a specialist teacher from the early years to 6th class. Having a subject specialist at primary level makes a real difference. Children are exposed to a wide variety of materials, techniques, and ideas, allowing them to explore art in a deeper, more meaningful way. Specialist teaching encourages creativity, builds confidence, and gives children the chance to connect skills and knowledge in practical, hands-on lessons.
Our art facilities are designed to inspire. The main art room, set in the old castle building, is ideal for drawing, designing, and other dry projects, while the adjoining “wet room” lets children get messy with paint, clay, and other materials. Both spaces are well-organised, with plenty of storage and display areas, so pupils can proudly share their work throughout the school.
With specialist teaching, children learn to use materials correctly, understand art language, plan and develop ideas in their sketchbooks, and work confidently both independently and in groups. They also learn to set up materials properly and complete their projects with pride, ready to showcase their achievements.
Art lessons at Castle Park are full of freedom and creativity. Children enjoy experimenting with paint, clay, and ink, and they love creating three-dimensional and sculptural pieces. With two 50-minute art sessions each week, pupils have the time to explore a wider range of artists, techniques, and projects than most primary schools can offer.
Physical Education (PE)

- Specialist PE from the early years
- Broad games and sports programme
- A sport-for-all approach: social, developmental and competitive pathways for every pupil

Physical Education (PE)
At Castle Park, PE is taught by specialist teachers from Pre-Primary 2 to 6th Class. From the earliest years, children receive expert guidance across all areas of physical development – from fundamental movement skills to aquatics, athletics, dance, gymnastics, and outdoor activities. As they progress, pupils build sport-specific skills in rugby, hockey, basketball, football, GAA, badminton, volleyball, dance, tennis and swimming.
Specialist teaching ensures lessons are purposeful, safe, and tailored to each child. Pupils develop strong skills, confidence, and understanding of teamwork, rules, and tactics. Younger children learn correct techniques early, helping them excel as they grow, while older pupils benefit from expert coaching and tactical insight in competitive sports.
Our PE programme is supported by outstanding facilities: a fully equipped sports hall, swimming pool, high-quality Astro turf, multiple pitches, indoor spaces for dance and fitness, and courts for badminton, volleyball, tennis, and softball. These spaces allow children to explore a broad range of sports in safe, purpose-built environments.
By the time pupils reach the senior end of the school, most can move confidently across a wide variety of activities, demonstrate strong fundamental skills, swim competently, understand rules and tactics, and compete effectively as individuals or team members. They also develop resilience, sportsmanship, and leadership.
Children consistently highlight the variety and enjoyment in PE lessons: trying new sports, playing matches with friends, improving skills, and staying active outdoors or in the sports hall.
What makes Castle Park’s PE programme distinctive is its sport for all model, breadth and inclusivity, expert teaching, holistic approach, strong extracurricular offer, and outstanding facilities. Every child has the chance to participate and succeed, whether in competitive fixtures, skill development, or personal sporting interests.

- Singing, instrumental work and music literacy
- Frequent performance opportunities on stage
- Choirs, ensembles and instrumental progression
Music
Music is a central part of life at Castle Park and is taught by specialist teachers from Pre-Primary 2 through to 6th Class. From their earliest years, pupils are introduced to music in a structured, supportive way that builds skill, confidence and enjoyment over time.
Our music lessons are led by experienced, highly trained music specialists who are full-time members of staff and work with pupils across multiple year groups. This continuity allows teachers to know each child well, recognise strengths early and support steady musical progress throughout their time in the school.
Pupils begin performing from a very young age, singing with movement and actions in the early years and developing strong performance skills as they move through the school. As confidence grows, pupils learn to read music, sing in harmony, and perform on stage in front of large audiences. Choirs play an important role from 1st Class onwards, helping pupils develop listening skills, teamwork and musical awareness.
Instrumental learning is carefully layered. Pupils explore rhythm through untuned and tuned percussion from Early Years, progress to ukulele from 3rd Class, and begin guitar in 5th Class. Music literacy is taught alongside performance, with pupils learning standard notation as well as ukulele and guitar notation.
Music lessons take place in dedicated specialist spaces, including music rooms, practice areas and the school stage, supported by high-quality instruments and equipment. Pupils often say they enjoy singing together, learning new instruments, exploring both modern and classical music, and having the freedom to be creative.
By the time they leave Castle Park, pupils are confident performers with strong musical foundations, well prepared for further study and participation in music beyond primary school.
Languages (French & Spanish)
Communication • Fluency • Confidence • Cultural Awareness
- Specialist-taught modern foreign languages
- Regular speaking and listening in every lesson
- Strong progression in conversational skills
- Pupils leave with a working foundation in both French and Spanish
Languages (French & Spanish)
Languages at Castle Park are taught by specialist teachers from an early age, giving pupils the confidence to communicate naturally and with accuracy.
Spanish is introduced in Senior Infants and continues through to 1st Class, 5th Class and 6th Class, while French is taught in 2nd Class, 3rd Class and 4th Class. All language lessons are delivered by qualified secondary-level teachers, allowing pupils to benefit from deep subject expertise and clear progression over several years. Strong relationships develop between pupils and their language teachers, supporting steady growth and confidence.
Lessons place a strong emphasis on speaking and listening. Role play is a particular favourite, with pupils scripting and performing conversations, alongside structured activities such as precision translation. Every pupil has the opportunity to speak French or Spanish in each lesson, helping language feel active and purposeful rather than theoretical.
By the upper primary years, most pupils can hold confident conversations — asking and answering multiple questions — and leave Castle Park with experience in two modern foreign languages, well prepared for the expectations of secondary school.
