Every prospective family who sits down with us eventually asks some version of the same question. Not always directly – sometimes it comes out as a question about the curriculum, or about homework, or about what the 6th Class year looks like. But the real question underneath is always: will my child be ready? Will they be okay? We think this is exactly the right question to ask. Here is how we think about the answer.
What secondary schools actually say
Over years of placing pupils into some of Ireland’s leading secondary schools – St Columba’s, Sandford Park, Blackrock College, St Andrew’s, SEK International – we have had hundreds of conversations with admissions staff, heads of year and former pupils about what the transition looks like. The consistent feedback is not about academic coverage. It is about readiness: whether a child can manage themselves, advocate for themselves, and keep going when something is difficult.
These are precisely the things we build deliberately, from Pre-Primary through to 6th Class.
The 6th Class year
Our 6th Class programme is specifically designed around the transition ahead. Pupils develop the independence, the self-management and the sense of identity that makes secondary school feel like an opportunity rather than a threat. The Ski trip – an overseas residential trip – is one of the most important things many of our pupils do in their primary years. Not because it is character-building in a vague way, but because it gives them concrete evidence of what they are capable of when things are hard.
Hearing it from our past pupils
We think the most honest answer to the secondary school question comes not from us, but from the pupils who have already made that journey. We have asked a number of them to speak directly about their time at Castle Park and how it prepared them. You can hear from them here.
